James Torrey

In Memory of James Torrey

Director of Engineering, Friend, and Visionary Technologist

Jim began his journey with computers in the early 1970s, tinkering with PDPs and IBM mainframes before most people had even seen a computer. A graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Computer Science, Jim went on to contribute to the industry at companies like Digital Equipment Corporation and EMC Corporation, where he earned the MVP of the Year award in 1999 for his engineering contributions.

Beyond his accomplishments in software engineering and several US patents, Jim was a dedicated digital photographer, videographer, and a passionate problem-solver who combined deep technical knowledge with artistic intuition.

In the last chapter of his career, Jim partnered with Alan Weiner to explore spatial computing through the creation of ?The Record Player? and early versions of what would become the myPromenade project. His work was foundational to our efforts in transforming browsing into an immersive, spatial experience.

Jim passed away in 2025. He was more than a colleague?he was a collaborator, a mentor, and a dear friend. His imagination and engineering rigor live on in every project he touched, and in the future of spatial interaction he helped inspire.
